We agreed to support Kulvinder in a very difficult period in her personal life. She is such an important coworker in the village, and we appreciate very much her great interest for the work with the girl's schooling

And mam I cant take 6000 every month mam I know this money is very important for me but I dont know my heart can not except this plz dont think oterwise. You said you support Ashu so its big thing for me. So I think I get only payment for the days I really work. I hope you understand.
With regard
yours kulvinder

BREV FRÅN KULVINDER / LETTER FROM KULVINDER

I GÅR KOM ETT BREV...
YESTERDAY I GOT A LETTER...

Dear mam
Hellow
Mam I met with all girls mothers they are happy to hear about girls results.  I told them that the girls are so hardworking but they need their parents support. If they give them time to read then girls read with more interest and get more good results. I asked to the Kavita's mother for continue her study and I discussed with all mothers and asked them about their girl's future. I met Kavita's father also and now they both agree to continue Kavita's study. Mam this time Mima said first Sugna will pass her school and after that they think about her marriage. So I think now slowly slowly they change their mind set.
I am happy now most girls going to the school and their parents understand the value of study.
Mam, Kunja, Mima, Pathani, Mirga and Jija1st, they are asking for their other girls support but that time I said I will tell this to you (Elsa mam) and I tell the women before the school opening. But mam I think we have many girls so we can't take more. We constraint only these girls.
With warm regards
your's Kulvinder

About Mirgas youngest daughter, we already decided to let her move to Gandhibal school
Jija 1st. Her daughter is Kavitha who will now repeat her 9th class, with more support from her parents.

Mima is the mother of Sugna who will be sure that she can complete her studies before marriage. This is a step forward, because her elder sister Nainu,18, had to struggle hard to get permission to finish her basic studies and then she wanted to go to college to become a teacher in Sanskrit. Now Nainu is married and we don´t know if she will be allowed by her inlaws to continue studies.

My comments: Kulvinder struggles hard with her English. I know she makes big effort to write this letter. Still it's quite understandable and I think she should be proud to be able to write such a letter. Nevertheless she decided to accept our proposal to join an English class to deepen the language.

DETTA ÄR NEELAM / THIS IS NEELAM

EN KORT BERÄTTELSE OM EN SKOLFLICKA
A SHORT STORY ABOUT A SCHOOLGIRL

This is Neelam, in this picture she is 7 years old and she gores to secondary preparation class. She wears her school uniform and soon she will go to school. The children starts school at 5, so Neelam has already made two years Now she is 9 years old and after summer she will start the second class in "real" school. In India the kids go to basic school 12 years. All don't go to school and many girls quit after 4-5 years, because they are needed at home to help in the household.. Boys don't need to help at all and they can just play and have fun.
Neelams mother's name is Mirga and here is the entire family. Two years ago the father died. Many fathers in this village are working in the stone industry, so did Neelam's father. After the hard work with the stones many men use to drink beer. Neelam's father drunk too much, he got ill and died. Mirga want's all her kids to go to school so they can get a better life.

This is the family kitchen. Here the elder sister makes chapatis for breakfast. Grandma and a cousine boy are waiting for food. Neelam's grandma and grandpa also live with the family in the small house that you can see on the first picture.

en av mammorna följer flickorna till skolan
One of the mothers follows the children to school. This is called 'walking schoolbus'.

Here is Neelam in the first class. The children are sitting very proper and quiet and do their exercises.

There are not always desks for all kids. Some must sit on the floor.
The shoes are put very carefully along the wall. And the children get up very nicely when any visitor occur.

A picture over a part of the schoolyard and the entrance to Gandhibal School. When the kids have the break there is a similar noise as in swedish scoolyards
After school the girls must help in the household. They are training to be good housewives. When they get 12 years old they should help to carry water to home together with the adult women.

The younger girls together with their "school mom", Kulvinder. Neelam is number two in the nearest row from the right. After school they change clothes not to get the school dresses dirty.

Kulvinder is the woman that helps the girls with school things. She takes them to the market to buy clothes and material, she goes every month to the school to pay the fee direct to the teacher. And when the term is over she shares the reports to each girl. Neelam is very diligent and bright at school, she got 89 points of 100. They have another report system in India than in Sweden.

Now we have 22 girls in different ages that can get good schooling with the help from swedish friends. The cost for one year is 1500 Swedish Crowns to go to a good private school.

In India in general school is free for al children. But very often the governmental school is not very good, so the girls cannot understand why they should go there.. That's why we help them to go to a good private school.
